Heritage and building restoration

Four jobs at one of Sydney's great industrial heritage sites

White Bay Power Station is one of Sydney's great industrial heritage sites. Between 2021 and 2024 we worked there for CBRE, on behalf of Placemaking NSW: a site amenities upgrade, an oil tank demolition, the salvage and storage of the station's heritage materials, and an office relocation.

Saving the station's heritage fabric

In 2022 we salvaged and stored the station's heritage materials: about 390 pallets of sandstone, pavers and bricks, along with steel posts and beams, plus eight containers of heritage items.

Sandstone blocks, clay bricks and pavers were sorted, stacked and strapped onto pallets, and the smaller and more delicate pieces went into containers.

What we did

  • 2021, site amenities upgrade. Ceilings and partitions, plumbing, mechanical, a new awning, joinery, doors and hardware, floors and paint, the office fit-out and equipment, and fire services.
  • 2021, oil tank demolition. We demolished an oil tank on the site.
  • 2022, heritage salvage and storage. About 390 pallets and eight containers, each pallet logged in an asset register.
  • 2024, office relocation. We moved an office team out of a demountable and into new level 3 offices inside the power station, bringing furniture and workstations across from 66 Harrington Street in The Rocks after hours.

Logged, labelled and stored

Every pallet was photographed and logged in an asset register with its location, a description of what's on it and its dimensions, so each one can be traced.

The containers were numbered and stored on site alongside the pallets.

From November 2021 to January 2022 we also catalogued Placemaking NSW's salvaged heritage items held in containers and on pallets at White Bay.
